INTENDED USE: THE K1-42TL "DUO TOUGH" WHEELSET IS A TRUE HIGH PERFORMANCE WHEELSET AIMED AT BIG GUYS WANTING A VERY STIFF AND ROBUST AERO WHEELSET. NOW WITH AERO SPOKES AS STANDARD!
IDEAL FOR TIME TRIALLING, TRIATHLON, TRAINING, FAST COMMUTING. AND NOW FOR 2020 THEY HAVE THE BENEFIT OF BEING THE WORLDS FIRST DEEP SECTION ALLOY TUBELESS & CLINCHER COMPATIBLE WHEELS.
It seems inconceivable to us: There was not a single deep-alloy TUBELESS READY wheelset available anywhere on the planet... yet the benefits and need for them is so self-evident. So, in keeping with our long experience of innovation in wheel design... we came up with our own wheels.
Our standard AEROLIGHT build is for riders up to 115kg. Using the excellent Ambrosio, Italian sealed hubs and PSR Aero spokes.
Our tough build is the the fabulous AEROFLOW option - with PSR AERO spokes and MICHE PRIMATO hubs, the lowest drag hubs available anywhere! (More>>). It is rated up to a maximum 130kg.
Fully clincher and tubeless ready they are 23mm wide externally and 17.5 internally. Fully performance optimised for 25c and 28c tyres (will also take a 23mm if you have frame clearance issues ... or if you are old skool!)
Your wheels will be hand built to order here in the UK by Andy Morgan, owner and founder of k1 wheels. Turnaround time is most often 7-11 days. (current build times are shown at checkout).

The rationale is simple and we can't understand why no other brand has thought about the performance needs of heavier riders. Perhaps not surprising as they tend to assume all riders are 8 stone after all!
Put simply, heavier riders tend to squash wheels radially and ordinary wheels compress under continual loading. Quite literally they are not round. Not only does this weaken the spokes and rims and hubs but the extra continual effort that it takes to rotate a wheel as it constantly deforms and recovers is huge. Like having donuts for wheels! (see donut image above!)
The solution is simple and known by all good wheel builders. its just that the rationale has not been applied to performance aero wheels ... until now.
The wheels are designed by Kinetic-One founder Andy Morgan. 10 years ago Andy was a 16 stone 10 mile Time Triallist. He rode the prototype of these wheels to a to a 20:47 minute 10 mile time trial which, whilst it was pretty pleasing, it was not that surprising given he was a TT specialist. But we only really knew we were onto something when he rode them to a top 20 finish out of several thousand riders at the Dragon Ride. At 16 stone - this shows that with the right equipment, heavy riders can still fly up and down even the toughest climbs. (There he is posing in the image above!)
Since then we've honed and developed the concept into what has become the K142-TL TOUGH wheelset . Applying all our knowledge of aero wheels and adding in the key concepts that impart strength above all else. And now the latest iteration is tubeless ready too - enabling heavier riders to gain proportionately even more compared to lighter riders.
So. What do we mean when we say the solution to making heavy riders fast is 'simple and known by all good wheel builders?'
Well. There are 6 elements that make a wheel stiff and hence round and true under load: Rim depth / rim strength / number of spokes / bracing angle / spoke gauge / lacing pattern. The decision to maximise the stiffness of each of these elements was the simple logic behind the 42-TL Tough wheels. That and using very strong components that don't add surplus weight.
Our super tough deep rims and spoke numbers are the key to stiffness. Our 28 spoked "paired / 2-Cross" pattern holds the wheels true under heavy lateral loads (the spokes from each pair pull together at the same point on the rim at exactly the same time - one from each side of the wheel and this balances the lateral forces). This is much more effective at keeping a wheel laterally true under load than a traditional spoke pattern (where the spokes are equidistantly separated and alternate one from each side along the rim - and hence are more subject to the continual deformation as shown in the above image) .
The new version, builds on the strengths of the earlier version. it offers the same superb aero gains by virtue of the excellent 42mm deep semi U shaped rim . But this year there are also new decal and new spoke choices also.
Aero wheels effectively offer free speed on the flats and descents and with the NEW K1-42TL TOUGH we've bought this aero advantage within reach of many more riders.

I would just like to pass on my recommendation and appraisal of the wheels I bought Christmas last year. I have just completed the Brutal ironman event in and around Snowdonia. The wheels performed above and beyond my expectations . The speed I gained on the downhill parts of the course and the sheer quality of the build is fantastic, several fellow rides asked about the wheels . Big thumbs up they are great.
Wheels: K1-42S Duo Stealth. Are there lighter wheels out there? Probably - in fact with admirable candour Andy makes the same point but at this price you will be doing extremely well to find anything better in terms of both looks and function. These wheels want to go and by crikey do they look the part. This is my second round of K1 wheels and I won''t be going anywhere else for the next set, though these look like they will check out long after I do. And a huge chapeau / thanks to Andy for getting them to me way ahead of schedule. You are an absolute star. Give this man your business - you will be very pleased you did.
I am happy to say that after nearly 600miles of small hills (cambridgeshire!!), chaingang rides in the dark and clubrides through the potholes of cambs, beds and northants, the wheels are strong as ever and no problems at all.
Do the wheels make me faster, difficult to say. Do the wheels make me feel faster.....DAMN right! Oh and they make a great noise freewheeling.....which i never do of course...ahem!
Great communications from Andy, rapid delivery and cracking looking wheels. I can safely say i am well happy at the moment. Hopefully, it will be a long time before i need to access the repair / maintenance aspect of the service.
I could not recommend these wheels strongly enough
Having used these wheels for a season of triathlons, I have nothing but positives for them! They look great great and I have had many of my triathlon clubmates enquiring about them.
I've used them for training and racing from sprints to 70.3 (and the Ballbuster Duathlon) and have been impressed with how well the wheels hold speed and and seen me smash my previous Strava segments (even when I haven't been pushing).
Having spent a lot of time searching the internet and reading hundreds of reviews, I'm so pleased I discovered Kinetic One: excellent personal service, quick delivery and brilliant wheels
I have to say the wheels are very good, look amazing, seem very strong ( I need strong ) and roll very well, I would recommend them to any one looking for a great set of wheels to upgrade the usual suspects that come with a new bike !
have attached a photo of my work in progress ( blue pedals ! ) its a Ciocc 7003 Alu and carbon frame with Colnago Decals pretending to be a B-Stay Master, but I love her :) and the new wheels just set her off beautifully. I get lots of comments when out on rides since they went on. Thank you. Jon
My first set of K1-42s are still running brilliantly after at least 2500 hard fast miles so I'm getting my wife a pair for her birthday as she has been asking for months now! Keep up the good work, your wheels are truly awesome, they honestly roll as good as my Zipp 'event wheels'. Please do use my words, I tell everyone I meet who say to me 'Wow, your wheels look amazing' where I got them and that I think they are utterly brilliant. People can't believe the price point!
Attached is a recent photo of them on my training bike (red, white and blue Trek in the gallery), it's a bit of a comedy pose but you get the idea. I use them on this bike (retro I know but I love it) and also on my TT bike.
With my best wishes, Stephen.
I bought some Kinetic-One wheels to replace my Shimano R501''s that were supplied with my Cannondale CAAD 8. Well first off they look great! Admiring comments from other cyclists at a recent sportive! They run quietly and do seem to roll better on the flat and downhill with no real difference from the R501''s when climbing. Must be the aero effect! Weight is about 1900g which is competitive for this wheel type / price point. I''m 6ft 2 and 82kg so weight wasn''t a key factor for me. They also seem to be robust having survived a number of significant pot hole encounters! So in summary would recommend!
Hello Everybody bought a set and was happy with service wheels came quickly in very safe box so no chance of damage ,A good choice of colours of wheels and depths of rims, went for the 40 mm deep rims didn't want them to shallow or to deep and they look fantastic on the bike plenty of head turners when out on bike . performance the braking on rims good little less wear than carbon rims very slight weight gain than carbon but tougher in my mind and will not snap on pot holes , you might get slight dis-shape but wheels will be able to be fixed not like carbon wheels.
Was looking around for carbon wheels and then I saw these. They did a good selling job with what they wrote as I was a bit nervous about carbon wheel strength anyway - so it touched a nerve. I love these wheels. had them only 2 months so can't comment on long term durability yet - but they are still so true and really feel incredibly strong when riding them over bad roads etc. Bought them to race on but have to say that they are on my bike 24/7 already!
