With alloy braking surfaces you don't need special brake pads and braking is better than with Full-carbon clinchers (particularly on very long descents)

The 55mm deep front wheel is superbly aero yet retains reassuring stability in cross winds. We feel that 55-60mm is about as deep as most riders need to go on a front (steering) wheel! (Unless you are a very confident bike handler who genuinely needs every single second - such as in drag-strip time trial courses, or sprint Tri's.)
The front 55 is coupled with our ultra-deep rear 80mm deep rear - to minimise drag and give you every watt of power.
The 55/80's are built around our modern "semi U" shaped structural carbon semi-toroidal aero rim. designed to run best with 23c to 40c wide tyres - running best we feel on 25c tyres to give the best rim/tyre integration and the fastest contact patch profile). The rim is designed to cut through the air going forward, whilst maintaining a superb lateral integrity to cross-winds across a full range of wind "yaw" angles.
In terms of rim width we think we've really hit the sweet spot at 23-24mm wide. We reached the decision to go "wide-but-not-too-wide" having extensively critiqued the pro's and con's of all of the many possible widths that aero wheels are currently being produced in.
We developed and continually honed our own testing protocols to this effect - and critically we looked at a whole raft of practical issues too that many rim makers simply overlook. For example frame spacing: Yes its possible to go wider than 23-24mm but at what point do wheels begin to compromise the frame or the brake calipers. The last thing you want is to find that your carbon wheels rub your frame the moment you get out of the saddle! 23-24mm wide is in our view the best blend of performance and practical usability in our experience.
PLEASE NOTE: if you have a narrow clearance frame - we can special order in some 20mm rims for you and we do find that's the only solution for users of many brands of bikes (Notably some older Scott's/Pinarellos/Cannondales for example!)
Unlike the vast majority of carbon deep-section aero wheelsets, the K1-55/80c's are also designed to be super-strong. Perfect for racing and still strong enough to train on. Within the carbon rim is a structural alloy cross section that gives these wheels hugely enhanced strength compared to most carbon wheels on the market.
This is by no means our lightest wheelset! This is because we have gone for strength, durability, and of course aerodynamics - as our primary objectives. Carbon wheels are a big investment after all and there seem to be very few carbon wheels on the market which are designed in this way and with these objectives in mind!
